To Frisbee, or Not to Frisbee
By Joe Traff
Frisbees, I find, are a great and ingenious invention. They are very simple to use, too. You throw the disk to another person and they catch it, and then they throw it back to you - very simple. It's about as simple as you can get, and yet people all around the world love this throwing disk. I guess it takes some skill, but still it is quite simple. I just wonder how so many people, including me, find this disk so amazing.
Some people may like it for the games that you can play with it, like Hot Box. Hot Box is a simple enough game. You have you runners that run between two designated bases which when touched make the runner safe. You also have two throwers or taggers which throw the Frisbee to each other and try to tag the runners with the disk. The runners' goal is to gather five points, which they get by touching the bases, without getting tagged. When a runner does this he replaces one of the throwers and become a tagger and it starts all over again. Another game you can play with a Frisbee is called Ultimate Frisbee. It's a lot like football, but you use a Frisbee instead of a football and you can't run when you are holding the disk. Other than that it's pretty much the same. I guess it's safe to say that the people that like Frisbee games like to run a lot.
Now here's a query, who was the genius that thought up the Frisbee? His name probably was like John Frisbee or something like that, but he still had to construct it and think that people would find it fun to play with. So how did he even get the idea? Did an alien abduct him and tell him to make a fun sized U.F.O. shaped thing that the human race could have fun throwing? Maybe the inventor thought that since people like disk shaped things that having a throwing disk would be cool. For example, pizza is shaped like a disk and people sure love pizza. So are pies, clocks, wheels, washers, CD's, DVD's, burger patties, the list could go on. So this person thought that if they were to make something that was shaped like a pizza, but could be thrown that it would be a hit (as long as they put extra pepperoni on it). Or maybe it was invented a long time ago when people thought that the world was flat and it was supposed to be a 'globe' of sorts.
I guess deep down inside me I really don't care how, who or what made the Frisbee, I just love to play with the thing. It's really fun to play with. I salute you Frisbee inventor and whatever gave you the idea to make this wonderful toy (even if it was an alien).
